Organic Cotton – Everything You Need to Know
We love organic cotton. Not just because it makes Square Flower bedding softer, stronger, and healthier to sleep in — but because choosing organic cotton shows respect for the environment it’s grown in and the people who grow it.
Many brands talk about sustainability. Fewer truly live it. We’ve all embraced organic food, yet few think about what touches our skin night after night. Here’s how to tell what’s genuinely organic, what’s just greenwashing, and why certified organic cotton bedding really matters.
Why Choose Organic Cotton Bedding?
You spend roughly a third of your life in bed. Shouldn’t that time be toxin-free? Organic cotton is naturally hypoallergenic and free from synthetic chemicals, helping you breathe easier and sleep deeper.
Beyond personal comfort, buying certified organic products reduces the volume of pesticides and toxins released into our soil and waterways. Even if you’re not an eco-warrior, you’ll notice the difference. Square Flower organic cotton sheets are breathable, smooth, and improve with every wash — stylish comfort that lasts.
What Is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is a natural fibre grown without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or harmful fertilizers. The process is monitored from seed to sewing, protecting both farmers and ecosystems.
This farming approach preserves biodiversity, boosts soil fertility, and prevents chemical runoff into rivers and oceans. It’s farming that restores, not depletes. At Square Flower, our organic cotton also happens to be Fairtrade certified — because doing good should include everyone in the process.
How Square Flower Supports Cotton Farmers
Our organic cotton comes from Chetna Organic, a farming collective in Odisha, India. Chetna supports smallholders through fair wages, food security, and sustainable crop diversification.
Together, we promote community empowerment through pre-financing harvests, building infrastructure, and helping farmers move away from debt-driven GMO systems. This isn’t charity — it’s partnership.
The Truth About Conventional Cotton
Regular cotton farming is one of the most chemical-intensive industries in the world. It uses over 16% of global insecticides — poisoning soil, rivers, and even farmers themselves. The result? Pollution, health crises, and long-term damage to local ecosystems.
Less than 1% of global cotton is organic. Worse, some textiles labeled “organic” are treated with harsh chemicals later in production. We’re here to change that narrative — transparently.
How to Tell If Cotton Bedding Is Truly Organic
The gold standard is the GOTS certification — the Global Organic Textile Standard. For bedding to qualify as GOTS-certified organic cotton, at least 95% of its fibres must be certified organic. Anything less (“made with organic cotton”) can include as little as 70%.
That’s why all Square Flower bedding is made with 100% certified organic Fairtrade cotton. No blends, no shortcuts — just honesty and quality.
What GOTS Certification Means
GOTS covers every stage of production: from soil to sewing, dyeing to packaging. Farms must maintain chemical-free soil for at least three years before certification, and every facility is independently audited to uphold fair labour and environmental standards.
Our supplier, Chetna Organic, uses crop rotation, composting, and natural pest control — even planting marigolds around cotton fields to attract beneficial insects. It’s proof that sustainable farming can be beautiful.
Better for You, Better for Everyone
Choosing certified organic cotton sheets means investing in your health, our planet, and the people who make your bedding. It’s not just the softest way to sleep — it’s the fairest.
